Kendra's eyes fluttered open and she was laying a field of wild flowers. Around her the birds were chirping and singing happily in the trees. The sun felt warm kissing her freckled skin. She stretched and yawned, not really knowing if this was a dream or real. Her dreams had always felt so real to her. She looked around and everything seemed okay. She stretched out her hand and watched her fingers as she moved them individually.
Counting each finger she watched with some amusement as her hand turned into a tree branch and a bird lighted on it. "Hello little friend." She said. It hopped around a few times and turned it's head skeptically at her. Chirping directly at her and then flying away. Okay, so she was definitely dreaming. She shook her arm as if she had touched something hot and when she looked at it again it was just a hand. She was still getting used to this power which had seemed to develop overnight almost.
It was the night she got into that big fight with her parents. She wanted to go to school out East, her parents didn't want her to leave Arkansas. Kendra wanted to go to school, what she didn't tell them was she wanted to attend the school for Xavier's gifted mutants. She had been having very strange dreams leading up to the big fight. Impossible dreams. Dreams in which she dreamt she could breathe underwater, only to wake up and finger he clothes soaking wet. Or dreams about her running into a burning building to save a child only to fing that she had burn marks on her forearms.
The wounds healed quickly. She healed them in her dreams. You see, what Kendra Dillenger dreamed became a reality. But only when she was asleep. They were lucid dreams in which she had complete control, but she was not bound by any laws or physics within them. If she wanted to fly she could fly. If she wanted to breathe fire she could absolutely do that, only she would wake to have incredibly messy hair from flying or a throat raw and horribly inflamed. It wasn't consequence free. She was still bound by those laws in the waking world.
Kendra stood and scratched her head. Looking around she wasn't exactly sure where she was but she knew she wasn't in Arkansas anymore. She pulled up the gps on her phone. Appearently she had flown here during last night's dream and decided the field looked as good a place as any to call it a night. Kendra walked. She walked for what seemed like hours. She checked her watch. It said it was 6 in the morning. Her body was still asleep back in that field but now she was walking through the city. If she slept in her dream, and then woke. Her body would follow. If she was awakened before her dream avatar could lay down and close its eyes; then she would wake back where her body was last at.
It was tricky. She was still getting used to it. Kendra found a park bench and sat down. She looked around. No one was around. She sat down and closed her eyes. It was instantaneous. When Kendra's eyes opened she was in her physical body. She looked up from her seat on the bench and saw in front of her a sign. A sign that read "Xaiver's school for gifted mutants."
This place was able to run under the watchful eye of G.A.D.E.M. Being a mutant was not exactly illegal, yet; but they definitely kept track of the dangerous ones. Kendra did not know if she was dangerous or not. She just wanted someone to talk to about her powers. Someone that might understand.
